Golf was included in the Olympic Programme in 1900 and 1904. At the 1900 Games in Paris, two events were staged: one for men and one for women. In 1904 at St. Louis, the women's event was replaced by a team event. At the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen, on October 2009, the IOC members voted in favour of re-introducing the sport in the Olympic Programme at the Rio 2016 Games. The tournament takes the "stroke play" format for both the men and women. The players compete over 72 holes to find out who will be crowned Olympic champions.
