Boxing

Information

Boxing was introduced in the ancient Olympic Games by the Greeks in the late 7th century and soft leather thongs were used to bind boxers' hands and forearms for protection. The sport made its debut in the modern era at the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis and the only country that competed was the USA. Since its inclusion in the Olympic programme, boxing has been staged at every edition of the Games, except in 1912 in Stockholm, as Swedish law forbade the practice. The rules have evolved since the 1980s; an obligatory protective helmet was introduced in 1984 at Los Angeles while in Barcelona in 1992 a set-up of an electronic scoring system was introduced to strengthen the objectivity of refereeing, and standardized point scoring was introduced in 2007.
