Indonesia Olympic Commitee - Sambo

Sambo is a Russian martial art and combat sport. Sambo is an acronym for SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya, which means "self-defense without weapons." Sambo was developed in the early 1920s by the Soviet Red Army to improve their hand-to-hand combat abilities. It has roots in Japanese judo, combined with international styles of wrestling and traditional style of wrestling.

Viktor Spiridinov and Vasili Oshchepkov were the pioneers of Sambo. They independently developed two different styles, which eventually cross-pollinated and became what is known as Sambo. Having trained under judo founder Jigoro Kano, Oshchepkov came up with judo-based system, while Spridinov had softer style and less strength dependent due to his injuries sustained during World War I.
