Weightlifting was among the sports contested in the inaugural modern Olympic Games in 1896. Since then, the sport has been part of every Olympic programme - except for 1900, 1908 and 1912 editions. Women only started to participate in the 2000 Sydney Games. In the Olympics, weightlifting has evolved greatly over time. Today, weightlifters compete in snatch and clean-and-jerk, and are ranked based on their total combined result. Beginning in the 2000 Sydney Games, men competed in eight weight categories and women in seven. This total of 15 events remain unchanged.
