NOC Indonesia Hopes the Olympic Day Spirit Will Give Strength during Pandemic

NOC Indonesia News Update   29 Jun 2021

President of the Indonesian Olympic Committee Raja Sapta Oktohari hopes the Olympic Day spirit will strengthen and unite Indonesia's Olympic families during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Okto spoke during the Olympic Day press conference on Tuesday, as the committee had to cancel the Olympic Day Walk activity, slated on June 23, due to the Covid-19 outbreak in Jakarta.

"First of all, I would like to praise God as we can gather in a virtual press conference in healthy condition amid Covid-19 outbreak. Second, I would like to remind us all that Covid-19 is real. Initially, we planned to organize the Olympic Day Walk along with Minister Youth and Sports Zainudin Amali and IOC member Erick Thohir. But, we had to postpone it as we're facing an outbreak. We must prioritize people's health and safety," he said.

Okto also reconfirmed Indonesia's ambition to host the 2032 Olympic Games despite the IOC plan to vote for the 2032 Olympic Games host during July's IOC Session.

" I would like to report our progress to the minister and IOC Member, Mr. Erick Thohir, that Indonesia has undergone all processes in the Olympic Games host selection. We know Brisbane has one step forward, but we're just behind it. It's not over yet. We'll do everything we can to host the 2032 Games," Okto added.

Meanwhile, Erick stated that the Olympic Day celebration reminded us of the importance of Olympism.

"The Olympic Day reminds us of the importance of sport in our life. Sport is not only about being fit or about competition. Sport has a vital role in building tolerance, discipline, peace, and sustainable development. I hope amid the pandemic we have to maintain the Olympic spirit in our daily life," he said.

Indonesian sports stakeholders get the Olympic Day present from the Minister of Youth and Sports. The ministry has just completed the Indonesian Sports Development Grand Design, which aims to improve Indonesian sports performance.

"In the grand design, it's stated that the Olympic Games is the pinnacle of the sport and will be our primary goal, while SEA Games and Asian Games will be the intermediate goals. We have set staging in the grand design, from 2021, 2024, 2028, until 2045, when Indonesia celebrates its 100th independence day," Zainudin said.
