NOC Indonesia News Update 27 Sep 2021
The Indonesian Olympic Committee pledges its full support for the 2020 National Games in Papua, slated on Oct. 2-15, and believes the event will have great success.
President of the Indonesian Olympic Committee Raja Sapta Oktohari said it's not easy to organize a sizeable multisports event during the pandemic. He believed that the National Sports Committee, KONI, and the Games organizers could take up the challenge.
"The Covid-19 pandemic has become a massive obstacle for all, including sports. But, we believe it will succeed as KONI and the organizers have prepared the Games for a long time. The government has also worked very hard to increase the vaccination rate to curb the Covid-19 infection rate," said Okto, Monday.
The 2020 National Games will feature 37 sports, 56 disciplines, and 679 events. More than 10,000 athletes and officials from 34 provinces will participate in the event. Jayapura is the main host city by hosting 15 sports and 21 disciplines, followed by the Jayapura region with 14 sports and 22 disciplines; Mimika region (nine sports and 12 disciplines); and Merauke region (six sports and six disciplines).
Based on data from the health ministry on Sept. 14, most host cities have reached more than 50 percent vaccination rate for the first jab. The Covid-19 Task Force has also drawn up the health protocols that participants must implement during the National Games. Among others are regular PCR tests, wearing double masks, and maintaining the distance.
Okto hopes that the participants will strictly implement the health protocols as the Covid-19 pandemic is not over yet. He also expects the National Games to deliver a new breed of athletes who will represent Indonesia on the international stage.
"I expect the 2020 National Games in Papua to have great success so the event can deliver new athletes that will represent Indonesia in higher level, from SEA Games to the most important competition, the Olympic Games, the pinnacle of the sports," he said.
