Indonesian Olympic News Update 20 Nov 2021
New dates for the postponed Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) in Thailand has been confirmed. The decision was rubber stamped by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) during its Executive Board Meeting, with a new date of 17-26 November 2023.
The event has been postponed twice, it was originally scheduled to take place in May 21-30 this year but was then postponed to March 10-19 in 2022 due to the Coronavirus crisis.
It was postponed again last month following a request from the National Olympic Committee of Thailand (NOCT).
Dato Seri Chaiyapak Siriwat from Thailand addressed the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Executive Board meeting. Speaking online, he admitted it was a tough decision to postponed the event for another year.
"Thailand is keen and passionate to host major sporting events and we look forward to welcoming all of you in 2023," he said.
OCA also announced that Saudi Arabia will host the seventh edition of AIMAG in 2025.
AIMAG is OCA's second biggest multi-sport event after the Asian Games. The last edition of the Games was held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan in 2017, with more than 4.000 athletes from 63 countries competing. The Games featured tradiitonal Asian events such as Pencak Silat, Sepak Takraw and Muaythai along with Olympic disciplines such as 3x3 basketball, badminton, and taekwondo.
Indonesia won 20 medals at the 2017 AIMAG, with two of them gold medals coming from indoor tennis and taekwondo.
